Road to the World Cup: 2010 - Episode 1

Lightning Seeds

England have been seeded for the World Cup in South Africa next summer - for the second World Cup in a row!

England did enough in qualification to be seeded for the Germany 2006 World Cup.. therefore avoiding facing one of the big forces in world football, Brazil, Germany and Argentina in the initial stages of the tournament.

This time around the Three Lions have impressed enough in qualification for World Cup 2010 to be seeded (meaning labelled as one of the top eight teams); however: both Portugal and France have not been seeded due to their struggle to qualify. Therefore England could face either of these two reputable nations in the group stages of World Cup South Africa.. As we all know, Portugal eliminated England in their last two major tournaments, both times through penalty shoot-outs.

Bad times :(

Naughty, Diego!

On a different note, some interesting decisions have been made regarding the attendance of the highly anti
cipated draw in South Africa.. taken from the BBC website:

"...Fifa has written to the Argentina Football Federation to make sure coach Diego Maradona stays away from the draw.

Fifa says Maradona's two-month suspension for an expletive-filled rant at a news conference extends beyond matches and also includes such activities as the draw."

Watch this space! The World Cup 2010 draw takes place on 04/12/09 at 17:15 GMT, and I'll be commenting on the outcome. Fingers crossed that England will be put into a group with Slovenia, Algeria and New Zealand! No offense, obviously.

"None taken", I hear them cry!
